Masters in Theatre & Design

Theatre and drama

Drama studies are the study of dramatic performances and how they are used in theatre, film, education, and therapy. During their studies, theatre students concentrate not just on acting but also on writing, direction, production, and theatre criticism. In the United Kingdom, drama courses require a detailed examination of performance and written material, as well as physical research of performance techniques. Students will also get the opportunity to participate in theatre productions.

You'll also learn how to research the history of theatre across cultures, have a better knowledge of how performance impacts audiences, and define and criticise what fits under the umbrella term "performance." They may specialise in dramaturgy, devising, scenography, management, directing, writing, and other areas.

Why study theatre and drama in the UK

Theatre, as a multidisciplinary art form, encompasses playwriting, acting, directing, and the various technical skills that enable its implementation. It embraces theoretical approaches of thought and is fed by diverse historical traditions as a live art form. These interactions have shaped contemporary practice. More than ever, the theatre serves as a nexus for formal and aesthetic inquiry. The study of theatre allows students to engage in a multi-perspective analysis of the world while also honing artistic skills and encouraging teamwork, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and effective communication abilities. The goal of this course is to change the demographics of the workplaces where our graduates will work. If you look at theatre, performance, or culture in general and don't find yourself reflected there, come to our class.

The goal of Applied Theatre is to make performance more accessible to everyone. More artists and facilitators who reflect the variety of the communities we deal with in the UK and around the world are needed. To that end, before we examine your grades, we look at the full person and what they can add to the industry. If you apply, we will ask you to an interview; please come and show us who you are and what you can contribute to this transformation effort.

Career Prospects

Because theatre occupations are so popular, they're exceedingly difficult to break into and aren't particularly well compensated. Once you're in, a lot of the jobs need you to work freelance, which means you'll be working for various employers on various shows rather than having a stable job. As a result, even once you've established a profession, you'll need to compete for jobs. Find work experience placements and participate in as many shows as possible at school or in your local community to make sure it's exactly what you want to do before you commit. While drama school allows students to polish their acting skills, a drama degree takes a more theoretical approach and provides graduates with a complete understanding of the topic, broadening their employment prospects in a highly competitive industry. Katy Ashworth, host of CBeebies and I Can Cook, and Abi Griffiths, who broadcasts sports programs for ESPN, are two examples of TV presenters. Drama graduates can work in drama therapy, music therapy, or dance music psychotherapy, all of which are related to the performing arts.
